Change Is in The Air (Whether We Like It or Not)
Something feels off today. A big change is happening, and it’s not the one we were expecting. It’s big, nutty chunk when we were expecting a smooth swirl. A steak knife when we really needed a spoon. It’s enough to give even the most optimistic among us a headache.
And it looks like it’s here to stay. Today in particular, it’s making a lot of us feel pretty down. Here are 10 things we're doing to feel a little bit better:
-
Sooth Your Mind and Body
Do some relaxing yoga, meditation, or tai chi to calm your body and mind. A little sweat and possibly a minor rug burn later, you’ll be on your way to mental clarity.
-
Connect with Friends and Family
You’re not the only one feeling down in the dumps with the way the world is looking these days. Talk to your nearest and dearest about how you’re feeling. Chances are, you won’t have to look far for someone to commiserate with.
-
Scoop Up a Smile
We’re not going to say that ice cream can save you from a bad day, but . . . ice cream can totally save you from a bad day. Hop on over to the store and grab a couple pints of your favoritest favorite flavor.
-
Read Some Feel-Good News
The news can feel daunting sometimes, with so many stories that make us want to crawl right back into bed. Check out the Good News Network for some instant good vibes to balance out the scary stuff.
-
Do Something Nice For No Reason
You know that good feeling you get when you hold the door for someone pushing a baby stroller? Or when you run after someone who’s dropped their mitten on the sidewalk? These things are little, but they matter. Do as many as you can today.
-
Create
Write. Draw. Cook. Paint. Code. Photograph. Studies show that creative activities can boost your mental and physical well-being. In our personal experience, making shapes out of the ice cream in your bowl works, too.
-
Vermonster Therapy
Go to your local Scoop Shop and order the one thing on the menu that you’ve always wanted to try: the Vermonster. But be warned: you’ll need a friend or two (or eight) to help out. Once you’re elbow-deep in one of these, you’ll forget all your troubles.
-
Look for Beauty Around You
It’s there, we promise. Take the scenic route to work. Stay in the car to listen all the way to the end of your favorite song. Get lost in a great painting. Remember that there’s still beauty and kindness in this ol’ world.
-
Spread Love
Even with all the negativity and unfairness in the world these days, there are opportunities everywhere for you to spread love and positivity. Step in if you see someone being bullied. Stop to chat with a co-worker who looks a little down. Do everything you can to lift those who need it most.
-
Use Your Wallet
Non-profit organizations creating positive change need your support now more than ever. Marginalized groups from African-Americans to the LGBTQ community to Muslims are facing new injustices every day, and it increasingly feels like our strongest defense is supporting the non-profits fighting the good fight. Check out the great work these groups do and put your pesos where your passion is:
• American Civil Liberties Union for preserving individual rights and liberties
• National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for, well, just that
• Council on American-Islamic Relations for justice and understanding for Muslim Americans
• Southern Poverty Law Center for fighting hate and teaching tolerance
• The Trevor Project for supporting LGBTQ youth
• Natural Resources Defense Council for fighting climate change and ensuring clean air and water for everyone
