8 Totally Weird Ways Our Fans Eat Ben & Jerry’s

Adding Salt to your ice cream

We all have our quirks when it comes to enjoying our favorite foods. Some people like their waffles without maple syrup, for example, which we cannot even fathom. (Seriously, why? Just why?)

And ice cream is, of course, no different.

Fans and Ben & Jerry’s-ers alike have their own ice cream idiosyncrasies, and we couldn’t be happier to learn about all the pint-diving diversity out there. We were particularly bewildered by these 8 totally weird ways our fans eat their Ben & Jerry’s:

  1. Take It With a Grain of Salt

Yup, we couldn’t believe it either: some people really do eat their ice cream with salt on top. They say it enhances the flavor, brings out more of the caramel and fudge swirls, and even makes it taste a little creamier. (We didn’t think it was even possible for Ben & Jerry’s to taste creamier!) Shake all you like, salty ice cream lovers, but we won’t be adding salt to our recipe anytime soon.

  2. The Swaperoo

We all have our flavor preferences — maybe you don’t love the fudge-covered almonds in New York Super Fudge Chunk, and your spouse isn’t a big fan of the walnuts in Chunky Monkey. What’s a couple to do? The ol’ swaperoo, that’s what. You dig out your almonds and pass them over to their pint, they dig out their walnuts and send them your way. Boom! Everybody wins.

  3. Just One Bite (Yeah, Right)

We’re pretty sure everybody’s done this, but for some people it has become their primary way of enjoying their favorite chilly treat. You open the freezer, spoon in hand, and muster all your self-control to have just one bite out of the pint of Phish Food. That’s all you need, right? But 15 minutes later, you’re back for another bite. And then 10 minutes after that, one more. At least there are no bowls to wash!

  4. The Chunk Extractor

It takes a special kind of chunk-lover to pull this method off. Those who want to maximize their chunk concentration sometimes opt to take their pint out of the freezer and let it melt almost completely. This loosens up all the chunks so they fall to the bottom of the pint. Then they re-freeze the pint, and when they’re ready to dive in, cut off the extra-chunky bottom layer with a serrated knife. After peeling away the container, they’re left with the chunkiest bowl of ice cream you could ever imagine.

  5. Spread ‘Em

Sure, usually ice cream is a scooping affair. But for some Ben & Jerry’s lovers, it’s a spreading affair, too. Like when they spread Strawberry Cheesecake on graham crackers to amp up the graham. Or Milk & Cookies on a chocolate graham cracker for a crunchy cookie experience. Sounds pretty tasty to us!

  6. Oh, Baby!

When we dig into a fresh pint of Chocolate Fudge Brownie, we like to grab the biggest spoon we can find for maximum chocolate euphoria. But some Ben & Jerry’s lovers take the opposite approach and like to use a baby spoon. Why? To properly savor their dessert experience, of course. Smaller bites means more bites, which means more chocolate. Right?

  7. Flavor Mix ‘n Match

What do you do when you have one scoop of Half Baked left in the pint and your dessert craving is demanding two scoops? Add a scoop of Cherry Garcia on top of it, of course! No bowl needed, just some careful flavor pairing instincts and your favorite spoon.

  8. Family Bonding

Who needs bowls when the whole fam is standing around the kitchen table chatting and catching up? One pint, a bouquet of spoons, and lots of gossip about Uncle Ed’s unruly ear hair. We say Triple Caramel Chunk is the key to true family bonding.
